Moving to Germany

Working in Germany

Germany is actively looking for skilled internationals — and rugby players fit right in.

Germany has one of the strongest job markets in Europe and actively recruits skilled workers from abroad. The Skilled Immigration Act (Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz) has made it significantly easier for non-EU nationals to work here.

The Skilled Immigration Act

Since 2020, Germany has opened its doors wider to skilled workers from outside the EU. If you have a recognised qualification — vocational or academic — and a job offer, you can get a work visa. Since 2023, an Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) allows you to come to Germany for up to a year to find work, even without a job offer in hand.

Job market highlights

Engineering, IT, medicine, finance, and trades are all in high demand. The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region around Heidelberg is home to major employers including SAP, Roche, Heidelberg Materials, and dozens of mid-sized industrial companies (Mittelstand).

Salary and cost of living

Germany has a minimum wage of €12.41/hour (2024). Graduate salaries typically start at €35,000–55,000 depending on the field. Heidelberg is moderately priced by German standards — cheaper than Munich or Frankfurt, more expensive than Leipzig or Dresden.

Recognition of qualifications

Foreign qualifications must often be formally recognised before you can work in regulated professions (medicine, law, engineering). The 'Anabin' database and the Make it in Germany portal can tell you exactly what's required for your specific qualification.

Tax and bureaucracy

Germany has a progressive income tax system. When you start work, you'll need a tax ID (Steuer-ID), which is issued automatically when you register your address. Registration (Anmeldung) at the local citizens' office is your first step — the club can help you navigate this.

SCN Tip

Several SCN players have relocated to Heidelberg specifically for work. We can connect you with club members who work in your industry and can give you a real-world picture of life here.
