Germany has a world-class healthcare system built on mandatory insurance coverage. As soon as you're registered and insured, you have access to excellent medical care — including sports medicine and physio, which is directly relevant if you're playing rugby.
Germany has two types of health insurance: statutory (gesetzlich, GKV) and private (privat, PKV). Most employees and students are covered by statutory insurance. Premiums are income-based — typically around 14–16% of your gross salary, split between you and your employer. Students pay a flat rate of around €110/month.
The major statutory insurers are TK (Techniker Krankenkasse), AOK, DAK, and Barmer. TK and DAK are often recommended for international newcomers because their websites and customer service are available in English. All statutory insurers cover the same basic benefits — the differences are in supplementary services.
Statutory insurance covers GP visits, specialist referrals, hospital stays, surgery, medication (with a small co-pay), mental health treatment, and dental basics. Sports injuries and physio are covered when referred by a doctor — relevant for rugby players.
If you're an EU/EEA citizen, your EHIC card gives you access to emergency treatment in Germany while you arrange permanent cover. It's not a substitute for full insurance but buys you time. Apply through your home country's health authority before you travel.
If you arrive before your statutory insurance kicks in, short-term travel health insurance (Reisekrankenversicherung) can bridge the gap. MAWISTA and Care Concept are popular options for international students and newcomers. Typically €30–60/month.
