Moving to Germany

Visa & Residence

Every route into Germany, explained clearly.

Understanding which visa or residence permit you need is the most important first step when moving to Germany. The right pathway depends on your nationality, purpose of stay, and personal situation.

EU / EEA / Swiss nationals

If you hold an EU, EEA, or Swiss passport, you have the right to live and work in Germany without a visa. You simply need to register your address (Anmeldung) within two weeks of arriving. That's it.

Student visa

For degree programmes: apply at your nearest German consulate with your university admission letter, proof of sufficient funds (approx. €11,208/year), health insurance, and a valid passport. Processing takes 4–12 weeks, so apply early.

Skilled worker visa

If you have a job offer and a recognised qualification, you can apply for a Skilled Worker Visa. Your employer will often help with the process. Since 2023, the EU Blue Card threshold for high earners has been lowered, making it even more accessible.

Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)

New since June 2024: the Chancenkarte allows qualified individuals to enter Germany for up to one year to look for work — without needing a job offer first. You need a recognised qualification, sufficient funds, and either German language skills or prior Germany experience.

Residence permit after arrival

Once in Germany on most visas, you'll need to visit the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) to get a residence permit. In Heidelberg this is the Amt für öffentliche Ordnung. Bring your passport, rental agreement, proof of health insurance, and biometric photos.

Path to permanent residency

After 5 years of legal residence (or 3 years with the EU Blue Card), you can apply for permanent residency. After 8 years, naturalisation as a German citizen is possible. Germany now allows dual citizenship in most cases.

SCN Tip

Visa rules change. Always verify your specific situation with the official German consulate in your country or the Make it in Germany portal. We can connect you with club members who've recently been through the process from your country.
