Housing in Heidelberg

Finding your place in one of Germany's most liveable cities.

Heidelberg is a beautiful and popular city — which means the housing market is competitive, especially at the start of each semester. Here's how to navigate it as a newcomer.

Average costs

A furnished room in a shared flat (WG) typically costs €500–750/month in Heidelberg. A one-bedroom apartment runs €800–1,200/month. Student dorms managed by Studierendenwerk are the cheapest option at €300–500/month, but waiting lists can be long.

Where to look

The main platforms are WG-Gesucht (shared flats), ImmobilienScout24 and Immowelt (full apartments). Facebook groups like 'Wohnungen Heidelberg' move fast. The Studierendenwerk Heidelberg manages student dorms — apply as early as possible, ideally before your visa is even issued.

Neuenheim — the club neighbourhood

The club is based in Neuenheim, a leafy residential district north of the Neckar river. It's popular with academics and students, well connected by tram and bike, and has good supermarkets, cafés, and a great riverside path. Many players live within cycling distance of the pitch.

What you'll need to rent

Landlords typically ask for: a copy of your passport, proof of income or a financial guarantee, the last three pay slips (or a bank statement), and a SCHUFA credit report. As a newcomer without German credit history, a guarantor or a larger deposit can help.

Short-term options

If you arrive before finding a permanent place, look at monteurzimmer.de or wunderflats.de for furnished short-term rentals. Some club members have also hosted new arrivals for a few weeks while they get settled — ask us.

SCN Tip

Reach out before you arrive. Club members have found flats for incoming players, acted as references, and shared tips that aren't on any website. The network is real.
